He listened to me, head bent and frowning. When I was done, he nodded.

"IVe heard some rumors myself," he admitted. "Nor have I been content with merely listening. I've been gathering men together in the caves of the Etam cliffs, young men who are eager to fight for Judah and vdth them I've put older men, men who know the use of weapons."

Anger bit in me. "What man of Judah understands the use of weapons better than I? You made me a promise, Samson."

He laughed and clapped me on the back, almost knocking me off my feet. "I have not forgotten, war captain. I've only been biding my time. Well, the time is ripe, now. When I go back to Etam, you go with me."

When I told Mahthys that night, she nodded as if she had been expecting this news for days. I thought she would weep but she did not. In the morning, I understood why, for I found her packing the blue chest with our few belongings.

When I sought to argue, to convince her that she must remain behind, she only shook her head. "I belong to you, Khamos, just as you, in a way, belong to me. Together, we are strong. Apart we are weak. A man going off to war must think only of the battle before him, not grow distracted by need for a woman."

"But the others—the young men Samson has gathered! It won't be fair to them for me to have you around while they—"

She laughed and threw her arms about me. "There are women there, too. Young girls and wives who belong to the men. Who do you think cooks and cares for them while they leani weaponplay?"

She had her way with me, as she always did.
